The development of modern messaging begins well before social platforms. In the early computing age, computers were massive, expensive, and far from ordinary users. This process was formal, and it left little space for human conversation through machines. Computing was mostly about submission, waiting, and output.

Instead of letting one user dominate a machine, time-sharing allowed multiple people to access a shared mainframe through terminals.
